Master of Architecture

The M.Arch. program at Columbia University emphasizes the nature of contemporary practice and places questions of design, fabrication, and creativity at the core of the learning process. Students are challenged to develop their own distinctive talents and interests in a program that emphasizes synthesis, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The curriculum includes classes in studio design, history and theory, and materials, assembly, and the environment. A variety of electives is available to M.Arch. students, so they can tailor their studies to their interests and professional backgrounds.

Applicants to the M.Arch. program should possess an undergraduate degree in architecture, or have an equivalent. The program requires a minimum of 180 units and a pre-professional degree. International students can also apply to the program if they already hold a bachelor's degree in architecture. For more information, visit the master's department's main Faculty & Staff page. This is a list of faculty and staff who teach in the Master of Architecture program.

The M.Arch. degree requires 108 credit hours of coursework. Some students with a related undergraduate degree can qualify for waivers. A typical semester includes 15 to 17 credits of coursework. Depending on the school, there are three tracks for the 108-credit-hour program. The Master of Architecture degree program is usually completed in five to six years. If you're interested in earning your degree in the field of architecture, the requirements for admission are relatively simple.

Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Science in Department Architecture (BS in Architecture) is an interdisciplinary program that incorporates coursework in art history, studio arts, environmental design, landscape architecture, engineering, and regional planning. This broad exposure to building science and technology prepares students to make innovative contributions as architects. Students in the Architecture Studies concentration specialize in the history and technology of the building process and will take more architecture studios. However, students may pursue both paths and complete their program in different years.

The program begins with design fundamentals, which introduce students to 3-D design principles. Students begin their second year with design studios that involve introductory design problems and significant building design analysis exercises. The third year focuses on solving increasingly complex building programs that emphasize inventive structural systems. Students will conclude their studies by working on a capstone project that integrates all elements of building design. After graduation, students will be able to apply their knowledge and skills to a variety of projects and professional opportunities.

After completing the program, students can move into the two-year Master of Architecture degree program. This program is fully accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Its faculty includes practicing architects, professors, and alumni, and it's possible to network across four academic areas and 350 architecture firms. By completing the program, students can enter a variety of fields, including architecture, interior design, and urban design.

Studio trays

Harvard's Gund Hall stands out against the red-brick campus with its imposing concrete exterior. Its interior could serve as a model for university social spaces. The building's four floors feature large studios called trays. Students share desks with people of like interests. Professors often visit the desks of their students for critiques. Studio trays encourage collaboration among students. Despite its colossal size, the building is relatively small.

For example, the statement display tray, 'Cement Tile,' takes inspiration from the tile in a bathroom. The tray is made from cement that is hand-poured into square tiles. Some tiles have been remodeled to include additional storage. Another striking tray, 'Candle Pit,' takes its name from Icelandic landforms. The slow burn of the wax creates an undulating landscape. It's perfect for the architecture department.

Faculty in the Sustainability cluster bring practitioner experience and interdisciplinary integration to their research projects. The goal of this cluster is to contribute generalizable knowledge to the field.

While design research is often iterative and does not include a planned, systematic process, it is important to ensure that it maximizes the impact of design innovation. Taking actions to enhance design research include setting clear aims, planning analysis between iterative stages, and addressing project delivery risks early. When conducted well, design research is highly visible, has measurable impacts, and is directly engaged with public audiences. Hence, it is vital to incorporate research that can benefit society.

Architects can apply their research to solve real-world problems. Impact is measured in social, economic, and cultural terms. It also accounts for the value of the research itself. The impact of architectural design research aims to address critical issues pertaining to technical, material, and performance. Architects can leverage research results to improve design and construction processes. This approach helps them become more competitive and productive. It is also important to evaluate how well the results of the research will benefit practitioners.

Career opportunities

As the demand for architectural designs grows, so will the number of job openings. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, architects can expect to see an employment growth of about 4% from 2014 to 2024. Many employers seek architects with a combination of technical and design skills, as well as experience in sustainable design. Though architects will typically spend their days in office settings, they can also expect to travel a great deal to construction sites to see how their designs will affect the overall structure of a building.

Undergraduates may find employment as an Office Assistant or Course Assistant in the Architecture Department at Barnard and Columbia. Applications for these positions are accepted on a rolling basis. For more information, check out their LinkedIn page. This group also uses a system called CREATE to manage their career growth. Interested students can apply online by visiting the Barnard GSD's career page on LinkedIn. Architects can also apply for positions at local firms that employ undergraduate students.

The profession of architecture is highly desirable. Architects are at the forefront of technological innovations, and they exercise their creativity. They work closely with clients to design new buildings and extend existing structures. They must also keep in mind the safety and budgetary constraints of their projects. Architects can also plan open spaces and natural areas. Landscape architects help to manage urban areas. Other architecture careers include naval and marine architecture. These professionals can make a great living planning and designing ships, as well as working as a designer.
